Zath is an excellent new-ish Chicago band that plays metal with a complex, thrash sound. Their double vocal attack is quite effective. It reminds us of Absu and early Slayer. Supposedly a 7" on the Captcha label is in the works. Zath features members of Cave, Ga'an & the recently defunct Cacaw.

Mayor Daley (featuring Emily from Implodes on bass) has been playing a ton of shows lately, highlights being the opening slot for Fielded at Crown Liquors a few weeks back and this show at the Music Box playing before the skate culture film The Dragonslayer at the famous Music Box theater in Chicago on Wednesday January 25th. Bitchin' Bajas (feat. Cave members) will also play.

The main effect of inhaling xylene vapour is depression of the central nervous system (CNS), with symptoms such as headache, dizziness, nausea and vomiting. Volunteers have tolerated 100 ppm, but higher concentrations become objectionable. Irritation of the nose and throat can occur at approximately 200 ppm after 3 to 5 minutes. Exposures estimated at 700 ppm have caused nausea and vomiting. Extremely high concentrations (approximately 10000 ppm) could cause incoordination, loss of consciousness, respiratory failure and death. In some cases, a potentially fatal accumulation of fluid in the lungs (pulmonary edema) may result.

Glad Cloud celebrates the rich landscape of Chicago musicians working with ambient music, be it acoustic, electric, or both. Curated by Benjamin Mjolsness, the series provides an opportunity for ambient artists to colour the air, walls, and liquids of the Whistler in a deliberately non-intrusive manner. Visitors enjoy their cocktails and companions while the music envelops the room around them. First Saturdays. 8:00-9:30pm.

Set 1: Matt Jencik is a guitarist in the Chicago band Implodes. They recently released the album “Black Earth” on Kranky. Jencik has been performing and recording since the early 90’s with bands such as Hurl, Don Caballero, Thee Speaking Canaries, and Taking Pictures; and played bass on the 2007 Slint “Spiderland” tour, as well as guitar for the 2009-2010 Papa M “Live from the Shark Cage” tour.

Set 2: Shawnee. Shawn is the main member of the Chicago based group Netherfriends. He recently finished a year long project where he wrote and recorded a song and performed in all 50 states. Back in December 2010, he also recorded and released an ambient drone album called "Alap" using a loop pedal and assortment of instruments.

Hurl was my first band that originated in 1992 about 20 minutes north of Pittsburgh. They existed until 1998. The group was influenced by other local bands like DON CABALLERO, THEE SPEAKING CANARIES & THE KARL HENDRICKS TRIO as well as bands such as SLINT, CODEINE, JESUS LIZARD, BITCH MAGNET, MISSION OF BURMA & HUSKER DU just to name a few. Henry Owings from Chunklet has compiled a big stash of downloads for the Pukekos blog including all of Hurl's singles, a few live shows, some rarities & a few videos. This is a far cry from IMPLODES but hey, I was a kid.

Criminally underrated late 80's band that started out in Austin & eventually moved to New York. They released four records on Homestead, all of you which you can probably find in various cut-out bins around the world. Their dark music was a mix of JOY DIVISION post-punk, New York goth-noise ala early SONIC YOUTH & SWANS & even post-hardcore like LAUGHING HYENAS. My first band HURL, covered their amazing song "Amnesia" on our "We are Quiet in this Room" e.p. If you see any of these records languishing in a store for less than $3, please buy it, if you don't like, i'll buy it off of you & give it to a friend. Spread the word, dawg.

About 4 years later I would be destroying my hearing listening to the "Zen Arcade" tape over & over again in my walkmen while delivering the newspaper to suburban Pittsburghers.

Violent ARP Band is a Chicago band that features IMPLODES guitarist Matt Jencik, Eli Caterer (SMOKING POPES), Mike Mazzola (LAZERS & FAST & SHIT/RAGTONES) & of course Jim Magas (ex-COUCH, LAKE OF DRACULA). Magas has a few releases under his belt of 'electro-gone-metal' rock. The basic concept of the band version is to recreate the songs using the traditional rock band format. Lately the band has been referring to their sound as 'ESG SABBATH'
The group's first show is at Enemy in Chicago on Friday July 30th. IMPLODES' lead guitarist Ken Camden will also be showcasing some of his solo work.

Just discovered the work of this painter courtesy of the LURKER blog. Hazy, dreamlike & some might say "Lovecraft-ian" (i guess more "Poe-esque since Spilliaert was a Poe fan) paintings done in watercolor, gouache & charcoal. Imagine if those paintings at the beginning of "Night Gallery" were actually decent. Well, I usually like those paintings too. Anyway. check it!
